UNDERGROUND FACILITY LOCATING RESOURCES

Underground Facility Locators locate and mark underground facilities (e.g., communication and alarm cables, gas, oil, water, and sewer pipes) before ground disturbance activities (e.g., construction). This service is crucial in preventing damage to underground facilities, and, due to an increasing number of construction projects, is highly in demand. However, the Underground Facility Locator career is relatively unknown, leading to recruitment difficulties.

To support recruitment efforts, the Government of Alberta,  Jiva Consulting, and the Canadian Association of Pipeline and Utility Locating Contractors (CAPULC) have developed resources for Underground Facility Locators. To ensure a diversity of perspectives and the effective capture of accurate information, an industry advisory committee representing various aspects of the locating industry (e.g., locating businesses, training companies, and equipment suppliers) helped guide the development of said resources.



As a result of this project, the following resources are available. Each resource can be accessed by clicking the corresponding link.



Underground Facility Locating Survey Results

People working in the locating industry were consulted via an online survey. This survey collected information, which was used to help develop materials to attract and retain individuals to the Underground Facility Locating Career. The results of this survey offer valuable insights into the Underground Facility Locating Career.

Underground Facility Locating Position Profile

An industry consensus-based position profile detailing the typical requirements and expectations for Underground Facility Locating is available. This position profile can serve as a basis for writing job postings for Underground Facility Locators or be used by job seekers to gain a better understanding of the Underground Facility Locating position.



Underground Facility Locating Career Roadmap

A visual "roadmap" detailing the typical minimum requirements and progression of a career in Underground Facility Locating. The career roadmap is also available in booklet form.

Underground Facility Locating Career Awareness Session Presentation

Ten career awareness sessions will be held in 2026 to inform job seekers about the Underground Facility Locating Career and provide an opportunity for them to connect with potential employers. These sessions will be supported by a presentation that offers helpful information on the Underground Facility Locating Career.
